Tuxedo Tips

Sean Meshgin of high-end men’s suit boutique, Cavallini in Beverly Hills, California, provides 10 crucial tips for grooms with a flair for sophistication and class.

.) As for when to start getting fitting for your tuxedo, be sure to go for the first fitting at least six weeks prior to the wedding. Then go for two fittings rather than just one to be sure the tux fits just perfectly after the adjustments made after the first fitting.

.) For tall and slim builds, we recommend a three-button or one button tux.

.) For regular proportion, i.e., 5’6 to 5’11 tall, we recommend a two-button tux, double-breasted. You could even go with a Shawl collar on the jacket.

.) When in doubt, just stick with a double breast or single breast with a Shawl collar – you can’t go wrong.

.) Suspenders are a must because most tuxedos don’t have a belt because they should not be worn with one. Without using suspenders, the shirt tends to ride up and the pants fall down. Suspenders keep you looking put together all day and into the night.

.) Make sure the pants are not too short. Sometimes a groom will get carried away not wanting to see the pant break at the shoes, which can end up looking like they borrowed their little brother’s pants!

.) Lace-up shoes are highly recommended and please no patent leather all over the shoe. Especially no patent leather over the top of the shoe because you don’t want to see a crack over the arch. You want to go with something that has a nice suede or soft leather on the top of the shoe instead.

.) As for socks, we suggest black silk for a black tux and navy blue for a navy tux. Also, they must be over the calf socks, not mid-calf because with mid-calf socks, the pants almost always ride up when the groom is sitting down and the last thing you want is to show leg skin on your wedding day.

.) Try and match your tie, bow tie and/or pocket hanky to coordinate with the bride’s colors.

.) And finally, always respect what colors the bride’s colors are and never have a 2nd opinion to that because it should always be what she wants – it’s her day!
